The first mobile solution for patient engagement and clinical services delivery to Apple iPad and Android devices.

Dublin, May 13th 2013
Lincor announces the latest addition to the MEDIVista product suite – MEDIVista MOBILE, during eHealth Week in Dublin.

MEDIVista MOBILE delivers patient services to iPads and Android wireless tablets and is a modular extension to the proven MEDIVista service delivery platform already deployed in over 20 countries and 125 hospitals. MEDIVista provides patient centric content and applications to fixed bedside terminals, improving patient outcomes and workflow for both nurses and physicians.

“Many hospitals are facing demands to develop a BYOD (Bring your own Device) strategy so patients can use their own mobile devices”, explains Lincor Solutions co-founder and CTO Enda Murphy. “Without proper management and control, this can lead to strain on the hospital wireless infrastructure. The proven MEDIVista server technology gives hospitals this control plus the ability to fully manage a potentially lucrative revenue stream.”

Richard Cooke, Lincor Solutions CEO, continues, “The rise of tablet devices has led to an increased expectation from patients and their visitors that they can use their own devices while in hospital. MEDIVista MOBILE enables just that and is a world first solution for hospitals to deliver live TV, Movies on Demand, internet access and Skype to both fixed bedside terminals and mobile tablet devices through a centrally managed service. Customers new to MEDIVista also get the peace of mind that comes from having the solution underpinned by tried and tested technology designed for the hospital environment.”

Lincor will be showcasing MEDIVista MOBILE at eHealth Week Booth #617

A recent LinkedIn discussion on the lack of training for users of EMRs after they had been installed got me thinking about the importance of training for this and any type of technology.

It is important to remember that training extends beyond being told what button to push when and should include training in why this is being installed in the first place, the aims of the project and a full list of supporting materials to help in the users’ learning curve. It is also important that procedures are in place to react quickly to the inevitable teething troubles that happen in any installation.

The whole of issue of training and user support is important for any technology, but it takes on a new level of importance when dealing with front-line IT in hospitals. Clinicians are busy people – they don’t have the luxury of time to sit down and figure things out when they go wrong. They can be called away at any second to deal with a medical emergency. In these situations they focus on the patient and fall back to the old way of doing things. Often this is pen and paper with all the incumbent problems the technology was supposed to solve.

Once the new systems are bypassed in this way, it continues to be bypassed. The technology then gets a reputation for being no good – so fewer and fewer people use it and its uselessness become a self-fulfilling prophesy.

New Hospital IT systems continue to be developed for good reasons – to increase efficiencies, improve patient care and reduce risk. In countries such as America there are systems of penalties and rewards that are encouraging technology adoption.

But – however good the technology is, its ultimate success depends on the users. Sure they need to be trained properly but they also need to be engaged in the entire project.

This engagement should see users consulted at the very start and ideally involved in design and testing of the solution as the project progresses. They should also be involved in designing the training because they are the experts in knowing what they need to know.

Lincor’s MEDIVista platform is accessed via a clinical grade, touch screen terminal at every bedside that is used by the patient, doctors, nurses and other hospital staff.

“The integration between nGage and MEDIVista will ensure that hospital staff will not be able to use the bedside terminal to access clinical applications unless they have satisfactorily cleaned their hands.” said Enda Murphy, chief technology officer and co-founder of Lincor Solutions. “Our hardware and software already have features to minimize the risk of infection, but the addition of nGage takes this protection to an entirely new level. With their dedication to reducing hospital infections, combined with innovative technology, Proventix allow Lincor to offer unique levels of hygiene in the point of care computing market.”

“We at Proventix are passionate about protecting patients from healthcare-associated infections by ensuring health professionals follow the highest standard of hand hygiene,” said Harvey Nix, CEO and founder of Proventix, “and we are actively looking to partner with companies that share our vision. Lincor is an ideal partner for us as they are already working in quality care improvement. We are excited about the prospect of working with them and sharing our vision with their network of global customers.”

Proventix client Shannon Medical Center of San Angelo, Texas was awarded the Healthcare Informatics Innovator Award for their use of the nGage system to improve the quality of healthcare delivered in their facility. Shannon will be recognized at the HIMSS 2013 Conference for their 62% reduction of healthcare-associated infections in a six-month period through use of the system.

At this time of year, it is common to see people discussing the future and its many challenges. Healthcare IT is no different and I have read many pieces talking about what has been achieved and the challenges being faced as healthcare IT practitioners attempt to meet the demand for new technology against a backdrop of reduced incomes (or at least the threat of it), increased regulatory oversight and a need to improve patient outcomes.

Fixed Point of care computing can help.

Noise is an issue and one that features in Patient Satisfaction measures. Some hospitals are trying to reduce the traffic of “noisy” carts being wheeled along corridors. Many of these (e.g. COWs, WOWs) are there to provide “convenient” access to hospital systems. But a fixed and flexible access point at every bedside to these systems – and the possibility for many more – signifgicantly reduces the need for this corridor traffic.

Hospitals have invested in a range of EMRs, PACs and other systems. Knowing how to and where to access them can be challenging and a big issue in large scale adoption. Providing an integrated, secure point of care gateway to all of these systems means access is simplified and all hospital staff can access data when and where they need it.

Usage of all technology is dependent on a robust and reliable infrastructure. As soon as people cannot access what they want when they need to, the tempatation to revert back to inefficient and error-prone manual work practices is very strong. With Lincor’s MEDIVista, for example, all access to all systems is via a high speed, secure fixed network based on a robust infrastructure with built in fail over to ensure continual operation. This mixture of convenience and reliability will ensure rapid widespread adoption and significant operational efficiencies.

Patient Engagement is a key consideration for future technology investment. An engaged patient is more likely take an active role in their treatment and recovery. The provision of communication tools such as Skype, internet access and direct phone access means patients avoid feeling isolated and become more receptive to actively participating in their care. Easy access to consistent and approved education and information material will help them understand their care plan and help them make any lifestyle and behavioural adjustments while still in hospital. An engaged patient is likely to be in hospital for less time and be more unlikely to be readmitted.

Point of Care computing has the potential to reduce Hospital costs and increase overall efficiency while delivering a better patient experience with lasting benefits.

For more on this topic, watch our introduction to point of care computing and the overview of MEDIVista.

During presentations, Endeavor focused on three critical areas: increasing census, improving the patient experience and increasing Resource Utilization Group (RUG) scores.

We had some excellent conversations with customers and partners – both current and future.

A lot of effort goes into planning and executing a professional presence at a major trade show such as MEDICA. Hopefully this wasn’t immediately obvious to our vistors!
